01
Follow the specification
Start with the use: sub-base, bedding, concrete mixing, drainage or planting. Choose a product that meets the project requirements. Similar-looking materials are not necessarily interchangeable.
02
Measure every layer
Length multiplied by width multiplied by depth gives volume. Use metres throughout, converting millimetres to metres first. Calculate separate areas and layers independently. Compaction and moisture mean loose delivered volume is not the same as the finished compacted layer.
03
Choose the drop position
Keep enough space for the delivery and subsequent work. Mention reach, overhead obstacles and the surface under the lorry. A driver cannot guarantee placement solely from a written description.
04
Confirm the complete order
Agree material, specification, quantity, access, price and delivery arrangements. If waste is leaving the site too, include that in the enquiry so sequence and separation can be checked.
